Readings on Housing The Housing Question by Friedrich Engels / Annotated by Dr. Anant Maringanti
"The Housing Question" is a seminal work by Friedrich
Engels, written in the late 19th century. Engels, a prominent socialist
thinker and co-author of "The Communist Manifesto" with Karl Marx,
explores the conditions of the working class and the inadequacies of
capitalist approaches to housing. His analysis is rooted in the broader
critique of the capitalist system, arguing that the housing crisis is a
direct consequence of private property and the profit-driven motives of
the bourgeoisie. Part One "How Proudhon Solves the Housing Question" is a
polemical essay, taking on an influential French socialist
Pierre-Joseph Proudhon as an instance of misidentification of the cause
of working class suffering.
In this reading
exercise, we take this first part and closely follow Engels' method of
setting up the polemic. We will proceed on the assumption that "How
Proudhon Solves the Housing Question" is at heart, the work of a master
annotator. :)
